The short version: we collect as little as possible, never sell anything, and tell you exactly what we keep.
Last updated: 3 June 2026
The short version
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not run advertising on betterbom.com.au.
- We do not require an account to use the site.
- If you join the alert waitlist, we keep the email (and optional location/severity) you give us, only to tell you when push alerts launch.
- Cookieless analytics (Vercel Web Analytics + Speed Insights) measure usage and page performance only; no IP addresses, no cross-site tracking.
What we collect
Page visits + product analytics
We use Vercel Web Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to understand how the site is used and to monitor real-user page performance. Both are cookieless and do not store IP addresses. Vercel generates a daily-rotating hash from each request to count unique visitors; the hash cannot be linked to you across days or across other sites.
Web Analytics records the pages you visit (as the route template, e.g. "/forecast/[state]/[locality]"), the referring site, your country, OS, and browser, plus a small set of product events — for example, switching between locations, opening the radar, or viewing the Pro page. Event data never includes your name, email, precise location, IP address, search query text, postcode, or any account identifier; sensitive query-string params are stripped at the browser before any event is sent.
Speed Insights records anonymous Core Web Vitals measurements (LCP, INP, CLS, TTFB) per page so we can spot regressions on real Australian mobile networks rather than waiting for synthetic Lighthouse runs.
You can stop all analytics at any time. Because both tools are cookieless and key off a single browser flag, the most reliable way to opt out today is to block analytics requests at the browser level — most content blockers and privacy extensions (and browsers with built-in tracker blocking) already do this for Vercel Analytics. We are also building a one-click "Disable analytics" toggle into the site so you won't need an extension. If you'd like us to confirm your opt-out or remove anything in the meantime, email privacy@betterbom.com.au.
Location preferences
To remember which place you were last looking at, betterbom stores the locality you choose (a short slug such as nsw/sydney) in your browser's localStorage. The same mechanism is used for any locations you save. This stays on your device — nothing about the locations you view or save is sent to our servers or linked to you.
Alert waitlist
Severe-weather push notifications are still in build. If you join the waitlist, we store the email address you give us, and optionally the suburb/postcode and severity preference you enter, so we can email you once when push alerts launch and have your preferences ready. We use that email for nothing else, and you can ask us to delete it at any time (see below).
When push notifications do launch, your browser will provide a unique push endpoint (a URL at Mozilla, Apple, or Google's push service) that we'll store encrypted at rest alongside the area you want alerts for; you'll be able to revoke that permission in your browser settings at any time. We'll update this policy when that feature ships.
Where it's stored
All operational data lives on Neon Postgres in the Sydney (ap-southeast-2) region. Backups are encrypted and stored in the same region.
Australian Privacy Act
betterbom complies with the Australian Privacy Principles. You have the right to request a copy of any personal data we hold about you, or its deletion, by emailing privacy@betterbom.com.au.
